STOP, READ & BOOK IN 3rd May 2018
A simulated fruit fly outbreak exercise will be held in the Riverland to ensure the local horticulture industry and government are ready to respond to such an event.
Exercise Fruit Fly Ready will simulate an outbreak of Queensland fruit fly in the South Australian Riverland during peak harvest activity and test the industry’s responsiveness.
Aimed at industry and growers in the Riverland, participants will experience what it is like to respond to a fruit fly outbreak and learn what processes occur in the response and recovery phases.
The simulated exercise aims to clarify high level roles during an outbreak, improve stakeholder awareness and highlight opportunities for improvements.
South Australia is the only mainland Australian state that is fruit fly free.
The estimated farm-gate value of South Australia’s horticultural produce vulnerable to fruit fly infestation, including wine grapes, was $1.25 billion in 2016–17.
The simulated exercise is being run by PIRSA, through Biosecurity SA, with support from Regional Development Australia Riverland and Murraylands and the Riverland Fruit Fly Committee.
Bookings & Registration
The exercise is being held at the Renmark Club on 3 May 2018.
Numbers are strictly limited. If you want to participate, please RSVP by 18 April to nic.smith@sa.gov.au.
